Studio 3.1
Palaces for the People
Dingle Price and Alex Gore
The ongoing pandemic has highlighted deficiencies in the civic infrastructure of the UK and many countries - a civic infrastructure that is critical to social justice and the resilience of society in times of crisis: Schools have closed, hospitals have been overrun, social and commercial life has been suffocated, jobs have been lost, and inequality has risen.
Workshop, Dance Hall, Mosque, Food Bank, Dwelling, Class Room, Health Centre.
This year Studio 3.1 will design community buildings that respond to the current crisis. We will design confident, efficient, adaptable buildings to facilitate a range of community functions. In times of crisis these buildings could allow education to continue, house the homeless, or become temporary hospitals. At other times they may support the growth of theatre groups or supper clubs. They may provide space for start-up businesses, seasonal festivals or become the place where a community votes.
Decentralised, Democratic, Flexible, Carbon Neutral, Economic, Robust.
The pandemic has resulted in a global recession. The climate crisis continues. With a sense of urgency we will design buildings that embrace economic construction and carbon neutrality, spatial and climatic responsiveness and a rigorous attitude to the assembly of parts.
Ayvalik, Bodø, Brentford, Kolhapur, Lagos, Pirot, Peterborough, Maidstone, Staines
Each student will design a building for a community they know well, in their own hometown. The building will be scaled to suit the size of the population it will serve.
In this era of social distancing, we will work together to create a studio community, and embrace digital tools of communication. We will be optimistic about the challenges we face as designers and as a society. And we will prove that necessity is the mother of invention.
